Monetizing a solo project doesn’t have to be complicated. What matters is aligning the model with the type of product and your users’ behavior.
Subscription (SaaS)
Charging monthly or annually is the standard for tools people use continuously. A low price (e.g. the cost of a coffee per month) reduces friction and makes the decision to subscribe easier. Annual plans with a discount help with cash flow and retention.
One-time payment
For tools used occasionally (generators, converters, templates), a single price often makes more sense. You can offer free updates for a while or a paid “upgrade” for future versions.
Freemium
Free version with limits (usage, features or time) and a paid plan for those who need more. It works well when the free tier already delivers value and the paid tier solves a clear problem (more usage, more integrations, support). Be careful that the free tier isn’t so complete that nobody needs the paid one.
Value-based pricing
Think about what the user gains in time or money by using your product. If you save someone 10 hours per month, charging the equivalent of a fraction of that tends to be acceptable. Test prices: many indies charge too little at first; an increase is often well received when the value is clear.
Summary
Choose a simple model at the start (e.g. a single paid plan or a subscription). Measure conversion and feedback, and adjust price and model as you better understand who pays and why.
