Working remotely on your own product can blur the line between “work” and “life.” A few habits help keep both productive and sustainable.
Define work hours (even loosely)
- You don’t need a 9-to-5, but having a default window (e.g. “mornings are for deep work”) reduces decision fatigue and helps others respect your time.
- Communicate when you’re available for calls or messages so you’re not always “on.”
Separate spaces when possible
- If you can, use a dedicated desk or room for work. When you leave it, you signal “work is over” to your brain.
- If space is limited, a clear “work mode” (e.g. same chair, same playlist) can act as a trigger.
Protect focus
- Block time for coding or writing without meetings or social. Use Do Not Disturb or a status so people know not to interrupt.
- Batch admin, email and support into specific slots instead of checking all day.
Rest and movement
- Take short breaks and step away from the screen. Movement and daylight help mood and focus.
- Define an end to the work day so you don’t drift into endless “just one more thing.”
Remote indie work is flexible but can become always-on. Clear boundaries and a simple structure make it more sustainable and effective.
